I’m pretty consistent with writing blog posts. I’ve been blogging since 2010. If only I had a record of all the blog posts I’ve written since then – but just as when a journal is complete, I toss it in the garbage, when my blog is no longer relevant to my life, I also toss it.
Creating content is the exponential value that you can deliver for free to people who need your skills and knowledge. It’s the way to educate your clients and customers. It’s a way to get all of your ideas and concepts into form so that they don’t all sit in your head.
I’ve never had any business that wasn’t largely focused around creating content (even though they’ve all being service based businesses) and I can’t picture any business that wouldn’t benefit from creating content.
There are many instances when I want to publish something on a particular day but I don’t know what to write. Sometimes I’ll begin a topic over and over again but it doesn’t flow. Other times it flies out of me in 10 seconds flat, but we’re talking about those sluggish days.
Here are some tips that help me:
- Make the commitment to create content in the morning and then pay attention all day long to see if anything happens in your daily life that inspires the topic. When that moment arrives, drop everything (even if you’re halfway watching a video or reading an article) and get writing.
- Brainstorm 5 different topic ideas and see if anyone automatically triggers you to begin writing. If none of them do, then move onto another tip (I’m basically saying DON’T FORCE IT!)
- Think about the people you most like to serve and ask yourself, “What would they have wanted to know from me before they began working with me?” Then meditate on the answer for a few minutes and see if anything sparks a new topic.
- Think about what you’re up to in the other areas of your life. Is anything metaphorical to your work? One of my hit articles was when I was working in my nutrition business and I wrote about “How your health is like a garden” which was inspired when I was weeding my garden.
- Is there any goal or project that you’re working on that you’re learning valuable lessons from? Can you share those lessons with your audience?
- Is there any valuable lesson you’ve learned from recent interactions you’ve had with business peers, on social media, or with clients that you can share to help others?
- Is there an aspect of what you do that you find challenging to express but if you were given an entire article you could really explain yourself well? Write about that! I did in this article.
- Is there any top 5 or top 10 list you can write? Sometimes even saying top 5 can spark a list idea. Readers love a good list!
If all else fails, you can always write an article about what to write if you have no ideas about what to write 😉
